The Top Five Best Yarns for Beginner Crocheters

When you're just starting out on your journey to learn crochet, there are so many factors to consider. What yarn should I be using? What hook size do I need? Sport, Worsted, Aran, yarn categories? What does it all mean?

These are some of the questions I had, myself, when I first began crocheting. I remember going into the craft store, and picking out a blue crochet hook - not knowing the size or letter would make a difference in my project's outcome, but simply liking the color! I then went on to produce a stuffed teddy bear amigurumi with the largest stitches you've ever seen! This experience got me thinking, there has to be a standard, a best choice, for each project. 15 years later, I can finally say for certain there are yarns, and hooks, to go with for beginner-based projects. While I'll save talk about hooks for another day, let's get into the five best yarns to use for beginner crochet projects!

1. Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn

Lion Brand is known for their outstanding variety of yarn colors and textures. And with so many options to choose from, it's easy to find yourself filling up your cart with unique yarns that might be trickier to work with, especially as a beginner crocheter.

When you pause to consider which yarns will be the easiest to work with, their 24/7 cotton yarn becomes the clear winner. It's thickness is just enough so that it won't slip off your hook, but will still create tight stitches that look clean and professional. For crocheters of all skill levels, this yarn is a must-have for any kind of crochet project.

2. CARON Cakes Yarn

Making a crochet blanket or afghan is a wonderful start for beginner crocheters, as the stitches and structure often requires little practice, and next to zero sewing skills.

If you're thinking of making a blanket as your first crochet project: look no further than Caron Cakes yarn. It's unique "self-striping" structure will help you to create beautiful color-changes within your blanket, without ever having to change your yarn. And as a category 4 (Medium) weight yarn, it's thickness will allow you to finish your project in a snap, without stressing over tiny stitches and little mistakes here and there.

3. Lion Brand Heartland Yarn

Yes, we've got another Lion Brand yarn (they're just too good!)

The Heartland Yarn is perfect for capturing that classic, rustic crochet look. It's wooly texture and stretchy consistency makes it super comfortable to wear, and a breeze to work with. I'm currently using this yarn for a crochet project I'm working on, and I couldn't be happier with the ease of this yarn.

Because of its two-tone dye pattern, the Heartland yarn hides mistakes really well - making it the best choice for beginners who want to create professional-looking designs, fast and simple. Versatility is the name of the game for this yarn, as you can use it for countless projects, and trust that you're going to fall in love with the end result.

4. Red Heart Super Saver Yarn

When considering what yarn to start out with, another huge concern is price. Some designer yarns go for $30 or more, and don't give you too many yards/meters to work with. Red Heart Super Saver yarn wins out in giving you the best bang for your buck: so you can get your practice in, without investing too much.

This was the first yarn I tried out when I began crocheting, mainly because Red Heart also offers a hundred different colors and prints to choose from. Whatever color, or print, you're looking for, Red Heart has it, and at an affordable and realistic price point. You can't go wrong with this one!

5. Caron Simply Soft Yarn

Probably one of my favorite yarns to date, the Caron Simply Soft Yarn is an essential for anyone starting out their crochet journey. Let's cover the obvious: their color choices are vibrant and beautiful, the yarn has a shine that makes any project stand out, and all for a modest price. But what's even more wonderful about the Simply Soft yarn, is its workability.

Obviously soft to the touch, the yarn is a dream for cozy, comfy projects. But it also has a structure and stretch that makes working with Simply Soft yarn painless and worry-free. Your stitches will glide off of your hook, and you might even find yourself crocheting without looking down to see where your hook should go! Trust me, it's that good!
